If you can write, you can make money on the internet! One great strategy you can learn to make money online that is cheap or free to do is article marketing. The idea behind article marketing is exactly like it sounds: you write articles to promote products or services, and when those products or services sell, you make a commission. Sounds easy, right? It is pretty easy, and typically free to do, but it does take a little work to begin generating a good income. This strategy is not a get-rich-quick plan, but if you’re willing to put in the work, you can get some great results out of it.

Before you can start making money with article marketing, you need to find products to promote. Thanks to the internet, you literally have access to thousands – or even millions – of products you can begin promoting today through programs such as Amazon Associates, ClickBank, and Commission Junction. The Amazon Associates program is great because it gives you access to pretty much Amazon’s entire product line. The products on ClickBank and Commission Junction tend to be knowledge products, or “how to” products, in the form of e-books. E-books can be great to promote because they often will allow you to earn residual income in addition to your initial commission.

Once you’ve found a product to promote, begin looking for keyword niches with low competition that relate to the product. You’re not looking for keywords that generate a huge amount of traffic, as in the hundreds of thousands of searches per month, but smaller niches with a relatively low number of searches per month and low competition so that your articles will have a better chance of ranking higher in the search results for those keywords. A great tool that I like to use for finding keyword niches is the Google Keyword Tool.

Once you’ve found a few keyword niches to target, begin writing articles targeting the keywords. The goal is to optimize your articles as much as possible for your keywords, so make sure to use your keywords in the article title and throughout the opening paragraph and body. However, don’t overdo it! If you try to stuff your articles with keywords in an unnatural way, you may not get your articles published. Make sure to use your keywords throughout your articles, but use normal English to do it.

Once you have a good keyword rich article, submit a unique version of it to multiple article directories such as EzineArticles, ArticlesBase, HubPages, etc. It may be tempting to submit the exact same article to a bunch of directories, but don’t do this! Because Google is always striving to provide the best possible search service, it automatically removes duplicates from its search results. If you have 10 copies of the same article online, chances are Google will only display one of them in the search results. You want to create a unique article for each directory you’re submitting to. It might sound like a lot of work – and it can be – but the work is worth the effort because it will yield the best results for your marketing efforts.

Depending on the article directory, you may or may not be able to directly promote your product in the article body. Some article directories allow you to link to the products or websites you are promoting directly in the article body, but others may only allow you to link in the signature box. Other directories may restrict the types of products you can promote. Be sure to take the time to understand the publishing guidelines of each article directory you’re submitting to.

Once you’ve gotten a number of keyword optimized articles online in various article marketing directories, your efforts will start to pay off in the form of traffic and eyeballs on the products you’re promoting. Again, you’re not necessarily getting tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of searches per month, but you don’t need that many to make some decent money. Once you’ve mastered how to market to one niche market and have generated some good results, find another niche market and begin working that one as well. Rinse and repeat again and again! Before long, your article marketing efforts may very well begin to generate some serious income.
