10 Ways to Make Money as a College Student
A few years ago, I was always looking for ways to make money as a college student. I’ve learned a lot of different jobs available to students along the way, and thought I’d pass on a few.
Basically there are two kinds of jobs you can have- you can work for someone else, or start your own business.
Working for someone else is definitely the easier choice. This is what I and most of my friends did to pay for college. Here are some of the best ways we found to make some extra pizza money:
1) Get a job on campus. I can’t recommend this method highly enough! You’ll most likely have flexible hours (nice during weeks with big tests) and get paid decently (my school started at $9/hour). You also may land a nice office job where your boss will let you do your homework when things get slow.
2) Become a waiter/waitress or bartender. If you work at a decent restaurant, you can make a killing with tips during the weekend. The problem is you’re on your feet all day, some people are uber cheap, and you may have to work on the weekend to get decent tips.
3) Work retail. Probably my least favorite of the different ways to make money as a college student, it is very common to find classmates working at the Hope Depot or American Eagle.
4) Join a temp agency. These aren’t the most brain-stimulating jobs usually, but depending on the agency and your local area you can make anywhere from $8-20 an hour. The problem is the temp agency takes a cut off the top- usually a big one!
5) Get a paid internship or co-op job. Some of these pay really well, but the majority aren’t going to exactly make you rich. The best thing about these is you’ll get training and insight on what the corporate world is really like.
6) Cut grass! There are landscaping companies everywhere, and during the summer it can be good money. I’ve never really seen a girl do this, but I suppose she could if she really wanted to.
7) Special events companies. There are lots of companies that rent out equipment like inflatables or casino equipment who are always looking for more help.
Besides working for another company, there are a few companies that are pretty easy to start and don’t require much capital
1) Start a tutoring company. If you’re in college you’re obviously good with at least one subject- why not tutor a high school student or classmate for a fee? You can easily make at least $15 an hour if you’re good.
2) Mow grass on your own terms! Especially during the summer, this can be really easy to get going. The only equipment you really need is a lawn mower, hedge trimmer and pair of clippers.
3) Learn how to make money online. I know it sounds cliché, but there are thousands of people making money online using different methods, and that number is only going to keep growing. You can even start without a website, but if you do purchase one it will cost you less than $100 a year, which is ridiculously inexpensive.
While these are all great ways to make money as a college student, I’m definitely most in favor of creating a business online. The potential is unlimited, your schedule is flexible, and the harder you work the more money comes into your pocket rather than someone else’s! Whatever choice you make- good luck!
